Inclusion in the Tech Industry with Josh Nilson | Co-Founder of East Side Games
Avneet Takhar
For the tech industry and the inclusion of Indigenous representation- the percentage is shockingly low. In B.C, just 0.7% of employees are Indigenous even though the sector employs over 260,000 people in the province. Yet the demand for tech talent grows yearly from 6.7%- 8.9% per year and there are 5 million Indigenous people who make up B.C’s population. The numbers don’t add up. And Josh Nilson is working towards making that change.
Nilson, of Métis heritage hailing from Willow River believes tech is for everyone and actively strives to play his part in helping create inclusive environments. As the Co-founder of East Side Games which has been recognized as a 2021 finalist for Gamechanger- Diversity & Inclusion Awards as well as one of the Top 50 Mobile Game Makers (2020). In this third episode, the discussion gets into contributions of Indigenous developers, navigating the digital space with Western vs Indigenous perspectives, and nourishing cultural identity in the tech industry.
